Don’t fall into the trap of prioritizing a busy life over a truly fulfilled one! Make the choices that have deeper meaning and life is sweet. – Tony Robbins and here
What does that mean?
Quick! What do you need to get done? Are you filling your schedule with a list of things which you “need to do” or are you focusing on the things which truly make a difference in your life and the lives of others?
To me, that is what the quote is about. Are you busy or are you fulfilled? If you don’t think about it, it’s really easy to end up busy. Most of us are busy at work. Yes, you have to do the paperwork, but does that really help the company? Sometimes yes, sometimes it’s just keeping you busy.
By choosing to do the more fulfilling things rather than just keeping busy, you will have a much more rewarding life. Realize, though, that you may not always have a choice.
Work is one of those places where you have to do what is assigned to you. But if you can find a better way, you might want to mention it to someone, and help everyone out.
Why is carefully managing your time important?
If you don’t take time to manage your time, things will simply pile up. How will you sort through them? By priority? Who sets that priority? By urgency? Who says it’s urgent? By size? Do you start with the little ones, and get boxes checked off, or do you start with a big one, for the accomplishment of completion?
How much time have you spent considering these questions? Or do you procrastinate until something is a red-hot, super urgent, gotta have it now kind of issue? How you chose to order things is your business, but if you have to do things, wouldn’t it be nice to enjoy it? At least a little bit?
By being thoughtful and making measured decisions, you can get done what absolutely has to get done, and still get the fulfilling things done as well. Yes, we can have our cake and eat it too, if we are careful with our time and the related decisions.
Where can I apply this in my life?
How careful are you with your time decisions at the moment? What questions could or should you ask yourself before you decide if you are going to do this or that? On what do you base your decision, or on what scale to you compare your options?
When you take back some of your life and determine that you have a choice in at least some of those decisions, you can begin to feel the fulfilled life you were meant to have. There will still be responsibilities. We can’t spend all day in front of the TV, right? At least not every day.
Take a moment and think about how you presently plan your day. How do you determine what you will do today, and what gets pushed off until later? How do you decide what tasks or jobs or chores get dropped and what stays? Grab some paper and write down what you did today, and how you decided what to do, and in what order.
Why do that? If you don’t know what you’re doing, how will you know what to change, right? If today was odd or not typical, use a day that was a little closer to normal as a baseline. Now take a look and try to figure out what your normal pattern is for decision making and write it down. A sentence or two should be sufficient.
Note that you will probably have very different rules for your free time compared to work or compared family or social time. You may need to make a couple different lists describing your priorities for each different aspect of your life. I know, it’s a pain, but how important is your time to you?
To live a truly fulfilled life, you have to make decisions to do the things that really matter to you. You still need to pay the bills, so you may find the majority of your free time devoted to your passion. That may crowd other things out. You will have to decide what is important to you.
One thing you might want to keep your eye on is the possibility of turning your passion into your job. If you like photography, remember that there are people who make a living taking pictures. You’ll have to build your skills, your client base, and find your niche. Not easy, but not impossible either.
You might not get straight to a truly fulfilled life by tomorrow afternoon. But you can start on the journey which leads towards fulfillment right now. All you have to do is examine your life, and how you live it, and then take action.
