For it was not into my ear you whispered, but into my heart. It was not my lips you kissed, but my soul. – Judy Garland
What does that mean?
Trying to logically explain a quote about love… This is going to be fun!
What the quote is saying is that there is a special connection between people who love each-other. This quote is obviously about a romantic love, but it applies to a lesser extent to other types of love as well.
It speaks of the special bond and how that can change the impact and even the meaning of words or phrases. A simple ‘Thank you’ can have a much larger impact when there is love involved.
If you’ve ever had a crush on someone, or seen a movie or TV show with someone who did, you understand what I mean. Coming from the object of the crush, those words aren’t just for your ears, they drill straight into your heart. And that first kiss, that’s not just for the lips, is it?
Why is giving your love important?
This quote is going out on Valentines Day, for those who celebrate it. It is often seen as an excuse to buy flowers, go on a date, try to steal a kiss and similar things. It often seems to be more about what you can get than what you can give, and I think that misses the point.
I find giving far more rewarding than receiving. While there is much to be gained in receiving, I urge you to try to give as good as you receive. What can you give of yourself today to someone you care about or care for? It doesn’t have to be hugs or roses, nor anything of that sort.
By giving of yourself, you are giving a part of your heart (metaphorically) to them to carry in theirs. Again, this holiday is about romantic love, but I believe we can spread the love around, in an appropriate manner, today as well as all the rest of the days of our lives. Don’t ever wait until it’s too late!
Where can I apply this in my life?
It is better, in my opinion, if you give of yourself, and preferably something from the heart. What can you do to show others that you love them, care about them, appreciate them, or otherwise hold them near and dear to your heart?
Who might be on the list? You can start with your present romantic entanglements, and move to family and close friends, and then on to anyone else who means something to you. Yes, the traditional card or phone call is better than nothing, can you think of something a little more personal?
Anyone with whom you have a history should also be someone you know well enough to know what they like. Even if roses are traditional, some might like daffodils instead. Personalizing a gift helps it come from the heart, not just the check book, right?
By showing you remember, by showing that you care, you help reinforce the bond. Whether that bond be friendship, kinship, or something more intimate, the point is to give something that they will appreciate at least as much as you will.
Guys, giving your girl something pretty to wear, but is primarily for your enjoyment, that doesn’t really fit the bill, does it? It tells her that you really got that for your enjoyment, not so much for hers. Girls, getting your guy a pair of tickets to a mushy play in which he is just not at all interested, that isn’t any better.
Hopefully that helps you figure out where your thoughts might fall on the scale of selfish to selfless in gift giving. Because to me, the whole point of giving is to make it memorable, and to make it personal. It is to give them something from your heart, which they can then carry in theirs.
For those without a romance at the moment, there are probably others in your life (non romantic) to whom you can reach out and give of yourself, even just a little. Keep it appropriate and personal, and see if you don’t feel better about yourself and warm your heart, even if only just a little.
And let me leave all of you with this excerpt from a poem by ee cummings:
Here is the deepest secret nobody knows.
Here is the root of the root and the bud of the bud
And the sky of the sky of a tree called life;
Which grows higher than soul can hope or mind can hide.
And this is the wonder that’s keeping the stars apart.
I carry your heart.
I carry it in my heart.
