Goals are like magnets. They’ll attract the things that make them come true. – Tony Robbins and here
What does that mean?
We’re not talking magic here. Having a goal won’t make things happen through some supernatural power. If you’re familiar with the author of the quote, you know his favorite adjective is “massive,” and his favorite verb is “to commit.”
The part of the quote that isn’t said here is the committment you have to the goals, and the massive amount of action you are going to take to make it happen. With that in mind, the quote gets re-written as: “When you are truly and completely committed to a goal, and are ready to take massive action, you’ll attract the things that you need to make the goal come true.”
Now even here, there’s no magic. Just like when you buy a new car or new shoes or new tie or new phone, suddenly, you see that there are so many other people have that item. That isn’t magic, that is perception. You know what you’re looking for, and now you notice what you had previously seen, but ignored.
Similarly, when you are very clear about what you want, and you’re committed to making it happen, and you’re ready to do whatever it takes to make your goal a reality, your perception changes. You notice things you didn’t see before. They aren’t there because you have a goal, but because of your committment and your willingness to work to get there.
Why is committment and willingness to work for your goals important?
Without these things, you’re not going to get very far. “Well, yes, I guess.” That’s not going to cut it. If that’s your level of committment and an indication of your willingness to take action, you’re going to have to be incredibly lucky to get that goal accomplished, right?
Every person, as well as every project or goal, will have cycles. Up times and down times. Times when nothing can go wrong, and times when nothing seems to go right. At the low ebb is when our committment is tested. Some people are like a failed roller coaster; they get over the first drop and then face the first up-hill run, and they give up. Lack of committment, it will kill a goal faster than just about anything.
The willingness to work is what actually gets things done. But it’s hard to get things done, to stay motivated, if you aren’t committed. If you say you’re committed, but not doing anything, your committment is a bit shallow, wouldn’t you say? If someone is big on talk but small on action, what will they get done? Will they get a lot done, or just a little?
Where can I apply this in my life?
Have you ever had the experience like was mentioned in the quote, where you got started towards a goal, and things started to fall in place? Everyone I asked said they had something like that happen to them, and I would imagine that you have as well.
When you focus on your goals, when you commit to achieving the goal, and when you start taking massive action, things just start to happen. In my case, people have noticed how committed I was to something, and asked what I was doing, or why it was important. My committment impressed them, and I got a little help. Not because of magic or magnets, but by committment and the willingness to work hard.
Imagine you’re at a store and you see a little kid climbing the shelves, trying to get their favorite cereal, cookie, or candy. They are committed and taking massive action. How long will it take before an adult helps them? It wasn’t magic, and it wasn’t magnets, right?
And as you become more precise with what you are trying to do, and get an idea what path you are going to take, you start asking questions. How will I get there from here? You look around with that question in mind, and your mind changes the deletion filter. Things start to stand out, and suddenly, you have the answer to your question. Again, neither magic nor magnets were involved. It was your committment and massive action towards you goal.
Take a moment and consider some of the goals in your life. Which ones are the ones you really want to do, even if you have absolutely no idea how you will get them accomplished? The more you want to achieve the goal, the easier it will be to commit to it, and the easier it will be to stay motivated, right?
If you were to cut out ten hours a week from low priority tasks, how much could you get done towards that goal? Where might you be in a month? A year? As you start thinking towards possible answers to your questions, you will start spotting potential solutions or workarounds. Again, there is no magic, and no magnets involved.
It’s up to you to determine what you’re willing to do, and what you’re going to commit to doing. You will also have to keep up the action (preferably a massive amount of action). If you can find a reason that is big enough, you will be able to stay motivated, and staying motivated makes staying committed fairly easy. Being motivated makes taking action easier.
It’s up to you to make your goals come true. But only you can do it, and only if you want it, and are willing to work for it. You can make it happen, and you will find a way, if you can stick to your goal, and believe in yourself.
