No one can arrive from being talented alone, work transforms talent into genius.

No one can arrive from being talented alone, work transforms talent into genius.Anna Pavlova

Do you have a talent for something? Getting better at it can be berry hard work.

Do you have a talent for something? Getting better at it can be berry hard work. 8)

What does that mean?
I heard versions of this quote when I was young. The basic idea is that there are plenty of people around with talent. However, some simply have some talent, nothing more.

Others have some small talent, but have learned to work it. They have learned how to use what talent they have, and use it to make things happen.

Imagine how different the world would be if Albert Einstein had decided not to put in the effort and worked his talent? What if he had decided that his work at the patent office was sufficient?

In this way, by working our talents, we can do something impressive with our lives. We can arrive, or even become recognized as a genius. It is up to us, we have a talent.

Why is working hard at our talents important?
There is an amazing amount of talent out in the world today. There are entire series of TV shows dedicated to finding people with talent. Some of them even work at it. If you have seen any of these shows, you know what I mean. There are lots of people with talent, but not a lot of polish.

These shows aim to take the talent and polish it up, and help the people work hard enough to attempt to touch the label of ‘genius.’ And more than just a few of them have. Some have even gone on to becoming the experts seeking the next wave of new talent.

But within each of us is some talent. The only question is what are we willing to do with it. Some never use it, or never discover it. A desert dweller might never learn of their talent for swimming. However, most of us are in a position to find our talents, or at least recognize them.

The big question is what will we do about it? Will we devote our lives to the development of this talent, or will it be a hobby? Will we put forth a lot of effort, or just dabble? We can have fun with it at any level of work, but to reach for the level of genius, that takes a lot of dedication.

Where can I apply this in my life?
That would depend on whether you think you have talent or not. If you do not, I would point you to the biography of a lady named Helen Keller. She was struck deaf and blind at about a year and a half old. Her talent was her ability to speak to people. That required her to learn to speak while deaf, no easy task.

Who would have thought she had a talent for public speaking? For reaching people and helping them understand? For persuading them? Yet that is exactly what she did, with a phenomenal amount of work. And she is recognized around the world as a genius. Hearing her story, how can we say we have no talent?

Even if we aren’t that interested in it, we may still end up developing a talent. I never really liked writing, and still can find a lot of things I would rather do. However, it is a great way to reach and help people all over the world, so I write.

Am I any good? Perhaps a little bit. I have written over a thousand posts and had over a million page views. My blog posts have been read in all but 4 central African countries, two African island groups, and Turkmenistan. Pretty good for someone who doesn’t even enjoy writing.

In my case, I found something I like to do, and found the best way to do it was through writing. So I write. Not because I enjoy it, but because it is the tool I use to help others. It is just that simple. I write because it allows me to reach people around the world.

The question I have for you is “What are some of your talents?” What do you do, and do well? What are your aptitudes, abilities, proclivities, or whatever other term you may use to describe what you do best? Grab some paper and start a list. Even the things you don’t really like to do, put them on the list.

Again, these don’t have to be things you’re willing to do full time for the rest of your life. I don’t blog for a living, I still have a day job. What about you and your interests? If you could carve out some time, what would you enjoy doing? Does it tie in with any of your talents?

While the quote is about finding a way of working very hard to get some amazing results, including the possible title of genius, I believe we can improve our lives and the lives of others if we are willing to work hard and develop our talents.

We won’t all be compared to Einstein or Keller, but we can make our lives and the lives of others better with our talents. That will take a little effort, practice, and time. But I believe it will be something you, and others, will enjoy for the rest of your life. Consider it, won’t you?
