A spark of fire helps to give light to the world. Think of this and act. None are too small, too feeble, too poor to be of service.

What do you mean, it doesn’t matter? It matters to this one!

What does that mean?
This quote is a central point in my life, as it is all about taking action. This quote reminds us that no act is too small, and that nothing that we do to help others is ever insignificant.

This quote says that every candle we light helps to spread the light across the world. It says that every service helps someone, somewhere, somehow. This quote is all about acting. Acting to help light the world. Acting to be of some service to ourselves or our fellow human beings.

This quote reminds us that no light is too dim, that no action is too small to count. It reminds us that it all adds up, tiny little bit by tiny little bit. It reminds us that we need to do our part to help ensure that things will continue to improve.

Why is taking action important?
Taking action, or acting, is what defines those who do things, those who make things happen. So many people talk about the difficulties they or others face, but it is the doing that brings about solutions or relief from the difficulties. Are you going to talk about it, or will you do something about it?

Talking about a situation can help raise awareness about an issue. You can also start a debate and argue for your position on the issue. But until there are boots on the ground, and people working on the solution, until there is action, what has all the talking really accomplished?

Where can I apply this in my life?
What are your favorite causes? What do you things in life do you talk about and wish that you could make a difference? Where in your life do you shine like a light for others? Do you like to build things, make things, organize things, or just help out with what is needed?

When you think about the intersection of your abilities and your favorite causes, perhaps you can find the spark to help light the way, as well as the enthusiasm to act and do something to help, to be of service. Wouldn’t that be nice, to be able to help by doing something you enjoy?

There are many things we can do, even if they seem small. A while back I saw an article about some homebound old ladies who were knitting scarves, hats and mittens for homeless people in the northern part of the country. It wasn’t much, but it was something.

Many things that we do may not seem to matter much on a global scale, but may be something very important to an individual person, or group of people. By chosing something for which you have interest and enthusiasm, it is easier to take action.

Taking action will help others as well as yourself. Yes, even if what you are doing is for someone else, you will not only feel better, but actually be better physically, mentally, and emotionally. That’s yet another reason to take action and help someone.

The neat thing about being a helper today is the number of organizations all around the world that exist to try to help others. It should be fairly easy to find something you can be enthusiastic about without having to start it all by yourself.

However, if you feel there is a niche that isn’t being covered, and you have the talent and the desire to start a new charity to address the issue, please take that action. To me, the important thing is to provide what help you can.

Another example of how you can help a little bit is blood donation, I’m no fan of needles, but I know that my donated blood is going to be used to help save the lives of people. That is a little thing that I can do about six times a year. It is a small act on my part that makes a big difference to someone else.

Like the boy and the starfish, who, when asked why he was throwing stranded starfish back into the sea, and told how futile that action was, and how it really didn’t matter, the boy simply replied “It matters to this one” and with that, heaved it back into the sea. What small thing can you do?
