Even though I am limited by my resources I am never limited by my resourcefulness.

Even though I am limited by my resources I am never limited by my resourcefulness. – Andrew G. Warby

Boxes can be fun for playing, but don't get stuck in one, physically or mentally.

Boxes can be fun for playing, but don’t get stuck in one, physically or mentally.

What does that mean?
I like this quote, as it reminds us that we don’t need to ever be stuck and unable to get things done. There are ways to move forward, if we can just think of it.

While most of us do not have the resources to simply do whatever we want, we don’t have to be limited by what we lack. We can use our imagination and creativity to get past our limits.

And, to me, that is the point of the quote. We need to remember that we are more than just what we have or the things to which we have access. Be creative and use your imagination.

If we live our lives thinking inside the box, we will always life inside the box. Life can be so much more interesting if we are willing to unstick ourselves from our limits and come up with new ideas. We can always do more with less. If we are creative and push past our limits.

Why is creativity important?
Being creative, using our imagination, finding alternative resources, seeking out new and crazy ideas, refusing to become stuck in a situation, and not believing in silly limits. If we can do even a few of these, we are going to rock the world. If we can do them all, nothing can stop us.

But of all these things, creativity is King. It is the spark that underlies all of the different ways we get past obstacles in our path. Imagine, if you can, a world where you have no creativity. Anything and everything you do has been prepared and predefined for you. You don’t think, you just go through motions.

That is the kind of dystopia you see in a few movies, or covered in more than a couple of books. Yuck. Actually, it’s a whole lot more than just “yuck.” Even a watered down version of that dystopia, a short story called “Harrison Bergeron” is super creepy. In that story, people had some creativity, so long as it wasn’t “too much.”

Creativity is what inspires creators, and helps everyone else put a little welcome variety into their lives. It is a spark for joy, both for us and for others. It is, for many, the heart of what they do, and who they are. How important is creativity to you, now that you have read this far?

Where can I apply this in my life?
That would depend on where in your life you feel stuck. Are you stuck in your job? Are you stuck for where to go for dinner? Are you stuck trying to figure out how to improve your home, car, or computer setup? Any one of these could be helped, with a little resourcefulness. And that is where creativity comes in handy.

Earlier today, I was briefly stuck when I was unable to gain access to some information on my work computer. I understand corporate IT has to set some limits, but they weren’t being too helpful. So I did a little brainstorming and found a way to get there by way of my smart phone. It wasn’t direct, but I managed to get what I needed.

I lacked the resource I needed (an internet connection directly to where I wanted to go), so I used my creativity and resourcefulness to find an alternate path to get where I needed to go, no matter how many extra steps it took me. I was going to get the job done, even if it wasn’t easy.

We are faced with situations like this every day. Have you ever been trying to get somewhere, but the road you would normally use is blocked? Does it matter whether it is because of an accident or maintenance? Do you turn around and go home, or do you get creative and figure out an alternate route?

Take a moment and consider where in your life you feel like you are stuck. Why do you feel stuck? Take a moment and try to consider what is holding you back. What are the walls which make up the box in which you are stuck? Are they real, or are they just something you invented?

Are you sure there are no alternatives? Have you done the research? Have you asked around? Are you sure that is really a wall, or is it just a figment of your imagination? Also consider what other options you might have. Do you need a new job, or do you need to have a little more fun at work?

Don’t let your preconceived notions limit your ability to be resourceful. There are plenty of ways to get things accomplished, and rarely is there only one narrow path. Find a way to do it, even if it means going off the wrong path and running through the mud to get to the proper path, right?

For most of us, the only real limits we have are the laws of Physics and our own misconceptions. Allow your mind to try things, and challenge your notions of what can or cannot be done. You just might amaze yourself with what you can accomplish. Try it, you might like it.
